About Waterlooians.ca
Waterlooians.ca is a grassroots volunteer group dedicated to ensuring the continued social, environmental, and economic health of Waterloo, Ontario. Waterlooians.ca mission is to preserve and strengthen the health of our community through:

  • innovative educational campaigns;
  • encouraging and promoting volunteerism; and
  • building bridges to eliminate different divides in our community (generational, cultural, economic) by bringing people together socially and encouraging positive collaboration and communication.

Low community participation with our municipal government reflects the need for a strengthening of civil society in our community. Low voter turnout in municipal elections is a partial explanation for the continuing decline in the health of our community and our municipality's poor financial situation.

Waterloo's current course is unsustainable and needs to be altered to ensure the sustainable health of our community. Waterlooians.ca is one of a number of community groups working to improve the social, environmental, and economic health of our community. With the increasing number of smog alert days, insufficient youth activities and programming, and the continuing under-funding of Canadian municipalities by higher levels of government, it is crucial that all Waterlooians get involved at all levels of the political process to ensure our community is on a sustainable path with a bright future for future generations.

Waterlooians.ca short-term goal is to produce a series of community education videos highlighting important "hard to find local information" that is vital to the discourse over our city's future. Each video will run approximately twenty-three minutes, featuring profiles of non-governmental organizations and local business, local sports and the arts, as well as interviews with candidates for the upcoming municipal election (Monday November 10, 2003).
